Yoga is not as "basic" as it seems.
It feels like nowadays everyone is getting into yoga, and it seems
to become more of a trend than its actual meaning. Yoga’s actual purpose is a Hindu spiritual and ascetic
discipline, a part of which, including breath control, simple meditation, and
the adoption of specific bodily postures, is widely practiced for health and
relaxation. Sanskrit is the classical Indian language still used in yoga to define poses and practices.
If you’re like me, and can’t even
touch your toes, you understand the struggle with stretching and being “flexible”,
but that doesn’t mean your body is incapable of yoga. I did a lot of sports
growing up and throughout high school, going into my first year of college I really
over welcomed that break of getting up at 7 A.M. every day for school, not
having to run every day, and being able to drink coffee in class. I soon
realized that I was losing a lot of my body muscle, of course like every girl, I
freaked out. I started working out and running again, but at the time I was
upset that I was going to be 20 soon and couldn’t even touch my toes. But
sometimes I'm just lazy and didn't feel like going to the gym or on a run,
and yes, yoga is a workout let me tell ya.
I started watching Yoga with Adrieneon YouTube and found myself to be semi more flexible than I thought. I love
Adriene’s videos because she is at a very nice pace and explains each position thoroughly.
She goes slow and does not overwhelm you in the videos with too much at one
time. She posts weekly, and most of her videos are 20-30 minutes long.
Seriously, instead of sitting on Instagram or online shopping for 30 minutes
while procrastinating from homework, do some yoga, treat your body and feel
good.
I don’t do yoga just for the
relaxation part, even though some positions are not all that relaxing and more “balanced
minded”, but also for an alternative workout and a break away from the gym crowd.
You’d be surprised how good it feels if you did a Cobra Pose, Downward Dog, or
just simply reach down for your toes every morning. It’s proven to wake up your
body better and it’s good to stretch out your body after sleeping in 10
different positions throughout the night.
I have mentioned previously that I do
hula hoop dancing, and I have tried to coordinate my balance from yoga with some
of my hooping moves, it is not as easy as it looks. It definitely takes some time,
practice and patience. I am no professional Guru or anything, I am still learning,
practicing and growing. It all takes time and patience.
